Section 1

eSIM Basics

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card permanently integrated into your device's hardware. The physical chip — called an eUICC — is soldered to your phone's motherboard and cannot be removed. What makes it revolutionary is that its carrier profile can be changed remotely, without touching the hardware.

The GSMA standardized eSIM technology in 2016. Today, over a billion devices worldwide support eSIM, and virtually all flagship smartphones released since 2019 include it.

For travelers, the key benefit is simple: instead of buying a new SIM card at every destination, you download a carrier profile remotely — before you even board the plane. One regional European plan can cover 30+ countries automatically.

Pro tip: Install your eSIM profile at home using Wi-Fi. Activate it when you land. You'll step off the plane with data already working.

Activation Steps

The activation process is quick and consistent across devices. Here's how to do it on the most common platforms.

📱 iPhone

  1. Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan
  2. Scan QR code from provider email
  3. Tap Continue, wait 1–3 min
  4. Label the plan (e.g., "Europe")
  5. Configure Dual SIM settings

📱 Samsung

  1. Settings → Connections → SIM manager
  2. Add mobile plan → Scan QR
  3. Follow on-screen prompts
  4. Confirm installation
  5. Set data SIM preference
Warning: Never delete an eSIM profile unless you have a new QR code. Once deleted, the original QR becomes invalid.

Choosing a Plan

Key factors to evaluate when selecting a European eSIM plan:

FactorWhat to Check
CoverageVerify all your destinations are listed
Data volumeTourist: 5–10GB · Nomad: 20–30GB+
Validity startPurchase, installation, or first use?
HotspotCheck fair use policy for tethering
Network tierTier 1 partners = better speeds

Dual SIM Setup

Dual SIM is the ideal setup for travelers: use your home physical SIM for calls and texts (keeping your number reachable), and the travel eSIM for data (cost-effective local rates).

Configure in Settings → Cellular: set travel eSIM as default data, home SIM as default for calls. Incoming calls ring on your home number; data routes through the cheaper plan.

Europe Coverage

Europe is one of the best regions for eSIM use. All EU member states have strong 4G coverage, with 5G expanding rapidly in major cities. Regional plans cover 30–50 countries, with automatic network switching at each border.

Note: Switzerland, Norway, and the UK are not EU members. Check your plan's coverage list if visiting these countries.
